  • Water Sprite
  • Daphnia (20x)
  • Volvox globator
  • Stentor
  • Euglena acus
  • Anabeana
  • Aquatic floating fern
  • Snail
  • Soil
  • Sand
  • Gravel
  • Straw
Figure 1.  The Dream Teams amazing Ecosphere with Daphnia and the Snail.
Our initial predictions upon finishing the construction of our Ecosphere was that it would persist, grow, and even flourish. As it turns out our predictions were correct, The quantity of daphnia has increased exponentially as well as the size of them. Not only did the daphnia get bigger, but the aquatic floating fern grew, as well as the othertwo plants that was introduced into the ecosphere. We feel that by adding a good amount of soil first and then straw, that was the key to grow an amazing ecosphere. we also used both sand and gravel in order to keep the dirt and ay from just floating around in the water and making it dirty. At one point during the past week or so, we noticed a thin clear white layer on the floor of the Ecosphere. As we discussed it over with each other, we concluded that it must have been some sort of fungi growing.
Figure 2. Close up on the ecosystem and the Snail.
Types of metabolism for each organism:

Aquatic Floating Fern - photosynthesis and cellular respiration
Water Sprite - photosynthesis and cellular respiration
Bacopa - photosynthesis and cellular respiration
Anabaena- autotrophic
Selenastrum Capricornutum - autotrophic
Volvox Globator - autotrophic
Stentor- autotrophic
Snail- heterotrophic
Euglena acus- photosynthetic

Expectations:
As the weeks progress, we feel that our Ecosphere will continue to thrive without any issues. Based on what the ecosphere was composed of, we believe that there will be enough nutrients and food sources for all the organisms that live within it.

  1. Hi,
Your ecosphere sounds very thriving and lively. I can also see that there are multiple generations of daphnia now. Likewise, our group also starts with 20 daphnia but they all seem to disappear now. I must hypothesize that our group may used shrimp in the ecosphere and it might compete for resources. As a result, the initial generation of daphnia faded away.

  2. Hi guys!

I found your growth of Daphnia to be quite impressive. Our ecosphere has many Daphnia but they're not as huge as yours! Actually very puny in comparison...But you guys had a better experience with the soil than we did too. We tried putting a small amount of soil at the bottom of the jar to be covered by sand and gravel but once we put the water inside, our water was so black that we had to start over. What's your guys' secret? How did you put your soil in as well as grow such large, thriving Daphnia? Great job guys!

  4. Each time I come to lab, I always love to see your Daphnia! It is sooo huge! I believe that after few weeks, your ecosphere will grow more nutrients. As I noticed, you put a lot of autotrophs and photosynthetic organisms. This could be the reason for the huge size of daphnia because other groups (like mine) did not put a lot of these. Overall, you guys did a great job!!

  5. I wondered what happened to our Daphnia every time I looked at your ecosphere. Ours are not so well-grown and decreasing in number over time, it may take a while for you to spot them as they are as tiny as dust particles, not to mention they are even smaller than those we first introduced to the ecosphere! :(
Well I guess the reason lies in your combining pond water with tap water plus nutrients as well as the wide variety of protists your group put into the ecosphere. It seems these altogether made up a highly rich source of nutrients that benefited Daphnia's growth.

  7. Your ecosphere seems to have done very well. What caused you guys to put the ingredients in that you did? Did you just go for it and put whatever you wanted in, or did you guys actually think about the effects the items you put in would have?
