Fungi Field Trip

By: 1/3 of the Dream Team, Matthew Heinekin

Over the course we saw many different types of fungi, mushrooms, and even some lichen. This one however is a Foliose Lichen and from the look of it, it was estimated about a couple years old. Lichen can pretty much grow on trees, rocks, other land plants, and even rusted old cars. They are composed of three types of different organisms, cyanobacteria, moss, and fungi. They play a crucial role in the ecosystem as it absorbs pollutants, from that humans can analyze it to tell how the environment is doing.

This photo is of a type of bracket mushroom. These mushrooms are roughly 10 years old, they are very hard, when you tap on them they almost feel like hitting a rock. this type of fungi have poly pores, meaning that they have tiny pore tubes that contain the spores. These mushrooms are decomposersm, how long they live is determined by how long it takes to break down the log that it is growing on.

  1. I believe that lichens can grow on pretty much every where since they are on every tree I see around the campus. It is interesting how they are composed of three different organisms which reminds me of one of the exam questions. I kind of felt like a fungi is a fungi and the end. Guess I won't get it wrong again. Your picture of the mushroom kind of looks like raw steak.
